Quince tree too big, will suckers replace it and fruit?
What I have done with suckers is to graft a bud from the mother tree on them, then transplant it in a in about 3 years. It is dependent on the mother tree for nutrients. I would cut the leader root about 3 feet from the host tree the second year then transplant it the third year. Suckers will not produce fruit like the established quince tree. All the quince types I know are grafted and the fruit will not be true to variety. I have a quince which puts out numerous suckers. I simply cut them down since I know they will not produce fruit like the parent tree. Good luck.
